Description
The Ahuriri Valley is a beautiful glacial valley on the eastern side of the Main Divide of the Southern Alps, within Ahuriri Conservation Park. The conservation park is a protected area of 49,000 hectares including tussock grasslands, forest, and river habitat, and centred around the headwaters of the Ahuriri River.
The main features of the valley are the Ahuriri River and surrounding mountains. These rise from around 1200 metres at the valley’s south end to over 2200 metres as the valley narrows. Here, you find yourself between the Huxley and Barrier Range to the north.
Parts of the 2020 Disney film Mulan were filmed in Ahuriri Valley near the conservation park, including the training camp scenes and some battle scenes.
