Description
Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (established in 1953) is a rugged land of ice and rock, with 19 peaks over 3,000 metres including New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook (3,724m in height). The Southern Alps run the length of the South Island, with Mt Cook being their centerpiece. A popular tourist destination, it is also a tough challenge for seasoned mountain climbers.
Aoraki / Mount Cook consists of three summits: from south to north, the Low Peak (3,593 m), the Middle Peak (3,717 m) and the High Peak. It’s ranked 10th in the world by topographic isolation, and the national park along with Westland National Park, Mt Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park form one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Climbing Aoraki / Mt Cook is what helped Sir Edmund Hillary develop his skills in preparation for the conquest of climbing Everest.
