Description
New Zealand’s most spectacular natural wonder. Despite its name, Milford Sound is actually a fiord, not a sound. It is also the only fiord in New Zealand that is accessible by road. However, its remote location, bounded by steep cliffs and dense rainforest, means its special features remain unspoilt. Milford Sound is located south west of New Zealand’s South Island within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site.
It has been judged the world’s top travel destination in an international survey and is acclaimed as New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination – it attracts between 550,000 and 1 million visitors per year. Rudyard Kipling famously called it the eighth Wonder of the World. As a fiord, Milford Sound was formed by a process of glaciation over millions of years. The village at the end of the fiord is also known as Milford Sound.
